This Bot will then open up a new world based on their respective game. Everything from Kratos’ critically-acclaimed soft reboot is used in its Astro yupitoto Bot level, like the environment or Bear McCreary’s score. These convey the God of War experience, but there’s an added twist.
And while it is fun to go around and interact with the bots here, there is a small chance that you will recognize every single one of them. If I have one complaint about the game it is that the record keeping system that keeps track of the bots collected, does not break down who the special bots are and the game(s) they are from. It was tempting to spin a narrative around Balatro’s chances, especially after we at Polygon selected it as our own game of the year. It had the reviews, and by indie standards, it was very widely played. The last time an indie game appeared to seriously challenge for Game of the Year at The Game Awards was Hades’ run in 2020.
Just like all or most platformers, there is little in the way of story. A little twinkle sparkled in the cosmos before a large spaceship with a headset flew. Astro Bot and his friends suddenly emerged from the ship and had a ball on the roof. However, their fun unfortunately came to a halt when a menacing red star shined in the galaxy before a green-coloured alien riding in his gigantic UFO soared towards the little robots and stopped beside them.
Gameplay Programmer, Akira Ishii speaks on this better than I ever could. He explains, “This ASTRO BOT is a love letter to our game fans…We created this game with love, and we hope the love letter reaches everyone”. That love and heart that the developers bled into the game, left me with a smile on my face the entire time. And after obtaining the game’s coveted platinum trophy and moving on to something new, I couldn’t help but feel as if I had said goodbye to a dear friend. As I reflect on the memories shared with the bot, I could not view Astro Bot as anything other than a masterpiece.

I just can’t help walking away from the experience with a bittersweet taste in my mouth and a hope that someday soon, we don’t have to look to gaming’s past for the best bits of it all. Furthermore, Rise of the Ronin was also mentioned, as a few more recent games, along with Croc and Worms for two classics. Beyond that, eagle-eyed fans were quick to spot a few possibilities in the game’s credits. The likes of Ubisoft were thanked as credits rolled, notably for their inclusion of Assassin’s Creed, Beyond Good & Evil, along with Rayman. As it stands, no Bots from those series are in the game, so there’s every chance they serve as some VIPs in the DLC.
Trunk Of Funk Overview
At this point, I should also mention the amazing capabilities of the DualSense controller. When our robot walks on a metal surface, we can feel it through the controller. When we launch our little ‘spaceship,’ we experience resistance on the triggers.
Surprisingly, the haptic feedback on the shoulder buttons, which was so impressive in Astro’s Playroom, isn’t emphasised but the audio and rumble design is the best we’ve ever seen in a video game. Many things in Astro Bot approach the quality and imagination of a Nintendo game but the use of force feedback surpasses anything on the Switch. However, two of these levels are based on dormant Sony franchises and if you can avoid having it spoiled for you what they are beforehand, they’re amongst the highlights of the game. They both replicate the mechanics, and audio, of the original games exactly and are an absolute joy, that will instantly have you wishing that they’d get full-blown sequels on the PlayStation 5. What results is a 3D platformer very similar to Rescue Mission (which hardly anyone played because it’s VR-only) and Astro’s Playroom (which everyone owns because it’s free with the console).
However if you’re still not used to using the PlayStation VR, you can’t afford this game and the headset or the aforementioned game isn’t your cup of tea, you should give this game a miss but you don’t know what you’re missing. What sets this platformer apart from previous and recent platformers is you’re able to interact with the game using your PlayStation VR headset and your PlayStation 4 controller. For example, you take advantage of the headset to look around your surroundings to control the camera. If I asked what the best first party Playstation game is, what would you answer?
There is, for instance, a God of War stage – I don’t want to spoil the others, most of which I liked even more, but Kratos has appeared in marketing materials thus far so I felt like the best choice for showing an example. The reason we hesitate over the score is that in terms of the actual platforming the game is rather basic. Astro has far less moves than Mario, which reduces the options in terms of level design. The main levels, and even the bosses – which are otherwise very imaginative – are also very easy. While ruminating on the game’s score, which is finally balanced between an 8 and 9, it’s the force feedback and audio design which pushed us over the edge.
Psycho Mantis – Metal Gear
Thanks to its simple, clean design and effective anti-aliasing, the game’s image quality is really never an issue and it holds up well without any ghosting reconstruction or other image stability issues. It presents very cleanly, which is so important for legibility in a platform game – and Team Asobi got it right. We’ve discussed that in a separate boxout, because none of that affects the game, but it is all very odd – and gives the distinct impression it was shoehorned in halfway through development.
